The six chaps on the photograph on this site with the caption
"THE AFTERMATH OF A TYPHOON KAI TAK AIRFIELD"
are my old mess mates D4 Mess Kai Tak 1946.
Third from the left was named Sheard(A Yorkshire lad) 4th.from the left was a lad from Bolton.
He kept telling us that Bolton were the first team to win the FA cup.
All of them would be about 80 years old now.
I would love to hear from or about them.
I think there were twelve in the mess and we lived in one of the canvas constructions which are also depicted on the site. I remember it was only a few yards from the runway .
We had lashed it down very securely and our losses were minimal even though they were soaking wet.
It was scary and something I have never forgotten
I think there was only one brick building on the camp where we took refuge after a while .
The skipper spliced the mainbrace (An extra tot of rum)
Following on from the storm there was considerable looting by the local chinese . I was one put on guard with a loaded rifle and orders to shoot.
I have numerous photoraphs of the occasion including some shown on your site.
I returned to Portsmouth late September arriving late October on HMS Patroller.
Is there anybody out there?
EJ
