There are many things in this world that are worthwhile. One thing that we should take note of is our impact on the lives around us, whether they are human or of some other species of animal, plant or insect.
There are two initiatives on the front. One is to leave a smaller footprint. Reduce, reuse, and recycle... only supersized to fit our mass consumption and industrial and commercial progress. Feathers, newspaper, and even sewer waste must be converted into something useful. Post industrial products can be made into consumer products. Sewer waste can be converted into usable methane with bacteria, then settled out, dried and converted to generator fuel.
The other initiative is to cooperate with nature. This entails intermingling with your environment.
Eco-tourism is one example. Eco-tourists fund locals to become guides to their area, and gain a lifestyle by educating others about the rainforests and other endangered environments rather than destroying them.
Green living is another example. Composting household food waste to use in your garden. Watering systems utilizing graywater. These are but small examples. Greenhouses can be built on to houses, passive solar energy used to heat a house, houses can even be built to incorporate living things. Greentops, or houses topped by a gravel drainage bed and a rooftop garden, are one way of doing this. Even houses woven from trees joined together with time and careful planning are starting to come into view as possibilities.
No one knows how far we can go, if we just change in our way of thinking about the world. Progress is about dealing better in the world, not making buildings that are bigger, or selling more products than anybody else. There is more to quality of life than money. There is the matter of life itself in all of its forms, and how we deal with it.
