I rented a house to a couple that got involved with a social worker aat one of those food pantries. The next thing you know the lady quit her job saying that after being apprised of all the benefits that were available to those under a certain income level it didn't pay her to work. That to me is a perfect example that validates what you are saying. The only issue though is that then these people become beholden to political individuals that offer even more handouts.

Consider the old KP. If I understand it correctly it was originally built to provide housing for people temporarily down on their luck. When the people rebounded from bad financial situations they moved out to seek better arrangements. Sounds great however as time went on many became more or
less permanent residents and we can all see with our eyes what the KP became.
As I say you look at things in the microeconomics sense and I look at it in the macroeconomics sense; two distinct ways of looking at the same problem while surprisingly both views are more or less correct. Today we as a country are faced with global immigration from many seeking to get on our welfare system. Individually many have some serious sad situations that each of us will feel empathy for. The question is though these people are manipulated by the political system to vote in ways that are not the best for the country. When people vote for a living instead of working for a living we end up with situations of dire consequences that we can see today. Take for example Granite City's police and fire underfunded pensions. Perhaps instead of spending on welfare those pension funds were funded instead. One way or another those pensions will be paid but where will the money come from? Welfare has become a career in this country and those in the system will always vote for more and more regardless of the harm it does to the country as a whole.
This often reminds me of the old saying "YOu can always depend on Paul's support when you are robbing Peter to pay Paul," and t the moment just how much more robbery can the Peter types handle.
