I don't think anyone can truly know. The homeless are largely hidden and it's hard to tell how many are sleeping in their cars or those who may be staying with friends and things like that.
The homeless are less apt to curl up in a doorway and sleep in the street..but more likely may be in cars or going from home to home. Many homeless, when funds are available may even find motel rooms from time to time.
It's truly hard to tell on any given night how many really are homeless.
Many of the more chronic homeless are also mentally ill. Our prisons are also our greatest providers of care for the mentally ill.
