As your resident opponent of the death penalty and one who believes in a focus on rehabilitation and correction over punishment ----- They damn well better be sentenced to more than community service. What they did - they all deserve a great deal of time. It doesn't matter who does it to whom, a human being should not be allowed to do this to a fellow human being. It's a constant ethic that ought to be applied across the human race, and even applies to torture techniques used by the military....etc. I am encouraged that there are many African American voices who have decried this horrid act. This appears on Black Entertainment Television http://www.bet.com/news/national/2017/01/07/watch--chicago-hate-crime-torture-victim-says-one-of-his-abusers.html I cannot declare one trend based on one internet article --- but not only do they make it a news story but many commenters talk about how deplorable these actions are. Even the 'Black Lives Matter' movement made a point to speak out against this. My point --- we are at a very tense time right now - but there are more people among the white ranks and black ranks who have had enough of this and who just want to live together in peace. 95% I am sure ... just want to get along.
