Congratulations to former GCHS football standout and NFL Hall of Fame inductee on having the football field at Granite City High School named after him. He is truly the most successful player to play in the school district.

That being said, and this is not criticism, I wonder why we always name fields after politicians, coaches or sports figures. In my opinion, I would have loved to see the school fields and maybe even more so the park fields, named after Granite City residents who fought and died defending the country.

For example, a young man named Keith Lucas was killed on Grenada while flying a helicopter in on a rescue mission. He was credited with protecting his crew even after sustaining mortal wounds.

The Vietnam era also saw many young men from GC killed on battle fields. It would be nice to memorialize these young people at our school, park and city facilities.

Again, no discredit to Kevin Greene. Just a thought.
