Clearly then, the date of the yearly audit for this Township was not made public. Most Townships, due to the push for government transparency and accountability go to great measures informing the public of an independent audit. It is a vital tool to assure the general public that an objective analysis was performed and proper accounting practices are being complied with. This is disturbing, especially when research brings corruptive practices so close to home. According to the St. Louis Post, a Canteen Township secretary was charged with embezzlement of up to $100,000 by forging the signature of the Township Supervisor. The auditors reported that discrepancies had been seen in the three years prior.
