Have to admit I agree with Cookie on this one. It would certainly reduce the many layers of taxation on the communities involved, and probably improve services in some of them...
And, the different organized political groups that would want the controlling power, boy would that be one "heated" election!!
Except, for now, I believe Mitchell needs to be embraced by Pontoon Beach or Granite, as those residents also deserve the local support that incorporation in to the rest of the community would provide.
An example, for law enforcement to have to check addresses before knowing who exactly should respond to a call is both time wasting and redundant. County should not have to come in this direction at all when there are Village and City police officers within blocks of any resident at all times....
The several holdout "pockets" of unincorporated county properties within those communities also need to be annexed, so that those residents are paying the same taxes as their neighbors. It probably adds up to a significant amount of additional revenue, too.
Unfortunately, we're all in the city, now, no matter our address.
I read online where legislation is now being presented in Illinois aimed at incorporation and reducing the number of taxing bodies in the state. It's a start.
