A Granite City police officer suffered minor injuries after someone entered his unmarked cruiser, struck him and then drove off as he inspected what
he thought to be a motorist in distress Monday evening.
The car’s location, and also the guns and other equipment police said were inside it, remain unknown.
Police Chief Rich Miller said in a statement that the officer was westbound on North Street approaching the intersection with Illinois 3 and stopped
behind a dark colored minivan that was not moving. The officer left his car to check on the driver and noticed the driver slumped over at the wheel.
“As the officer tried to awaken the driver he heard his car backing up from its position behind the van. At this time the squad car now driven by an
unknown suspect drove forward striking the officer knocking him to the roadway,” Miller wrote. He said the squad car and the van then both drove
    off northbound on Illinois 3.
The officer was treated for minor injuries.
“Inside the vehicle were personal items of the officer as well as police equipment including firearms, vest, badge and radio,” Miller wrote. “The
vehicle was electronically tracked a short time after incident to the downtown St. Louis area where the signal ended.”
The squad car is a silver 2014 Ford Fusion with Illinois plates reading B372394.
Miller could not immediately be reached for additional comment Monday night, but in his statement urged anyone who sees the car to notify police.
