No one needs assault weapons other than the military. People can protect themselves and hunt and protect their family with regular handguns/shotguns in their homes.
You know what else no one needs and kills alot of people (probably many more than assault weapons do): motorcycles. They are far more dangerous than cars and serve the same purpose.
By the way, you know the 2nd amendment was not put in place to allow people to defend their homes, and hunt. (in that day you didn't need to write down that right, it was a given) It's to protect people from the government, aka, the people who control the military, who happen to have alot of assault weapons.
In a free society, people are going to get killed from time to time. Some by gun, some by knife, but many more by carless drivers, drowning, even falling down stairs. Every body would be much safer if we had no cars, if recreational water activities were illegal (drowning kills many more kids than guns every year), and nobody had stairs. But what kind of society would that be? Not one I'd like to live in. These mass shootings are extremely rare, even though they now seem common. It would be ill advised to unarmed the citizenry with the government we have, they would run a muck with power in no time at all, within 3 weeks you're be forced to convert your home to a 1 story and fill in your basement, you'd have to rip out your pool, and install anti drowning grates in your shower, (no more baths) etc... After all, we need to keep everybody safe.
