In my opinion, our country has grown so desensitized to violence committed with a gun or otherwise. We hear it every day, day in day out week after week, month after month etc...When turning on the morning news, we would be far more shocked to hear about the dawn of a new day with no murders to report, than we would be to hear about 4,5 or more additional murders committed during the night.

Our judges are so jaded to these crimes, that they feel a slap on the back of the hand is a fair sentence, and they think nothing about turning a violent criminal loose and allowing them back on the streets to repeat this behavior.

We need to build more prisons and run them like a real prison. No cable TV, no weight rooms, no rec rooms and no free ride. Each prisoner needs to be charged for all essentials, food, utilities, medical and dental care. These prisons should be working prisons that house working inmates. Bring back chain gangs for outside work. Each prisoner should have to pay their monthly bill for expenses and what ever is left out of their pay, they should be allowed to spend in the prison store. If they have nothing left out of their pay, they have nothing to spend. None of this having family or friends load up an expense account for them non sense, do not allow that. If they need or want more money after their monthly expenses, let them ask for over time and work for it.

We need to reevaluate the worth of a human life as well as pain and suffering and mental anguish. A great example would be the recent sad story mentioned above about the animal thug who decided to try to end the life of a service man that he robbed at gun point. Even though the victims followed his demands, he still chose to shoot one of these people in the back in hopes of killing them. If this man is lucky enough to survive this attack, we will house the thug animal who did this for a few years and then release him back into society. It's sickening.

If his victim does survive, this criminal should never again be allowed to walk this earth a free man. He intended to murder this man. Just because he failed to end his life, the intent was there to do so. He should be jailed for the rest of his life without the possibility of parole.

If everyone knew beyond a shadow of a doubt, that the consequences for taking an innocent life would be spending the rest of your life in prison with zero chances of ever being released was the end result.....violent crimes would drastically reduce. And if not, we would have many many little worker bee productive inmates.
