What a blast from the past! Last night I went to Prather School for the referendum meeting. I haven't been there since 9th grade. I was born in Granite City however my father was in the military and we lived in Japan and Germany till we moved back in 9th grade. Prather was my assigned school.........I showed up in nice black slacks, white shirt and tie....slide rule on my belt, pocket protector with 4 nicely sharpened pencils......I WAS BASICALLY A PINATA.....seated next to a guy who looked 27......I swear to goodness he had a pack of smokes rolled up in his t-shirt sleeve, rolledcuff jeans, P.F. Flyers and about all the bryllcream in the world in is hair.....spent the entire year corking me in the arm.....went home and told my mom that I thought I had died and been sent to Shawshank...............WELL WOW ! What an inviting school it was last night and the Principal did an amazing heartfelt presentation.........also present was the Superintendent of course for support as he always does...........however the point of this is that I sat next to a lovely teacher Dee, 2nd grade and about to retire.......after all these years she still beamed with love for her 2nd graders........I'M TALKING ABOUT A HERO HERE!.......but also her class has 27......did you read right??.....yes 27 kids....I asked how many aides she had.....puzzled she replied none.....surely we need to support our schools, teachers, and staff that everyday are in the trenches giving our kids their very best ...............such a difficult thing that growing up.........but every kid out there is precious to someone and every teacher in Granite City no matter how up hill the struggle seems is committed to everyday invest their very best in our kids helping them to be all they can with the gifts they have and hard work..........people tend to see themselves through the eyes of those that love and affirm them...........grateful for the people in the trenches.........today I would suggest to all parents to take time out regularly to send your child's teacher just a brief note once in awhile saying "Thank you for investing your life in my child"..........encourage our Teachers.......they are busy every day encouraging your children................just saying.............b
