    Thank You GCG Archived Message

Posted by Katy and Lorri on March 5, 2015, 11:49 pm

We want to take a moment to address a couple of comments that were recently posted in our Discussion Board. Before we do so we want to thank all those that visit our website. The time has passed so quickly, as we and our audience of readers, have grown through the years.

We appreciate our visitors supporting us and our local business advertisers. Our homepage was first published in 2006, and we received approximately three thousand hits. Today, nine years later, we are still going strong and have a faithful following, averaging approximately one hundred fifty thousand hits each month. Again, we thank each and everyone of you.

Recently a thread titled "Thank You GCG" was posted on our Discussion Board. The poster said it is not unusual to hear comments such as "Those hoosiers on GCG do nothing but gripe." and "That site is ridiculous."

We are fully aware that debates or discussions on such topics as local elections, and most recently, the School Tax Referendum, are passionately debated, even becoming heated at times. And this particular post, "Thank You GCG" was interpreted by us as a compliment and a vote of confidence, initially.

After reading it again, ultimately it felt like it was possibly a backdoor insult or veiled slam, but most bothersome, possibly an attempt to discredit our website, the platform we provide for our community and lastly, our efforts in providing an informative and helpful website.

When people are passionate about making a point, or bringing a debate to the table, it is always an effort to get others to see or agree with their point of view. If someone fears that they are failing to convince those of an opposing view after all plausible arguments are exhausted, would their last resort effort be to tarnish the character of, or to discredit, the messenger?

In this case, we consider our website and our Discussion Board the messenger. We provide this Discussion Board in hopes that it allows everyone who visits here an equal voice. A voice that reaches a large audience.

Everyone, whether you are a poster or merely a reader, knows that these threads reach our schools, our teachers, our school administrators and ultimately the school board itself.

Your words reach our City Hall, all elected officials, all department heads and employees, even the mayor himself.

Your words are read by our local police and fire departments, our hospital, our fraternity organizations and by many business owners.

We have worked with Gateway Regional Medical Center, the Granite City APA, the Granite City Park District, the Six Mile Regional Library, the Good Samaritan House, the Phoenix Crisis Center, the Granite City High School Bands and countless other organizations and churches that put their trust in us to promote their good works, with honesty and fairness.

As recent as this afternoon we were contacted by the president of the teacher's union with a request to announce to all voters within the district about an upcoming "Meet the Candidates" meeting.

We are hoping that any negative comments heard regarding GraniteCityGossip.com and our Discussion Board are referring to a different website that we are sometimes confused with. We will not name the site, but many of our visitors will know exactly who we are referring to.

We have accomplished so much since the launching of our website so many years ago. Working with and for our community, whether advertising a fund raiser for a local family or by designing a simple birthday wish, brings us a sense of community pride. We have laughed and we have cried with some of the wonderful residents of this city and it's surrounding areas. We have provided Christmas for many local families, filled many empty refrigerators and kitchen cabinets with badly needed food. We have delivered bicycles and toys for birthdays and have had electricity reconnected for families with no other resources. We have never expected, nor wanted, recognition for these deeds, and request that we remain anonymous when possible.

However, we have always stood up for our community and for those who live here, and occasionally we even stand up for ourselves and what we believe in, and this is one of those times.

    Thank you
    Katy and Lorri
