Governor Rauner agrees that education budget is an issue. Rauner says, “Yes, unfortunately Illinois is 50th. We’re dead last among the states for state support for education.” Rauner wants to change this. “That’s wrong. We should increase state support even though we have a financial crisis.Rauner did not lay out specifics, but his plan includes the public school system and higher education. Rauner says, “I want us to have the best schools in America in every school district, especially right here in Rock Island County. I want to bring back vocational training and job training in the system.”One attendee, Emily Ramsey, is an admissions counselor at Ashford University. She says, “I thought it was a message of hope. He really hit the factors that need to be changed in Illinois.” For education, she says, “LIke Rauner said, it mostly comes from property taxes and you can tell there is a big difference between the Barrington School District and the Chicago Public Schools and that is not fair to our children.”State Senator Neil Anderson was amongst the crowd. He says, “funding our education is a top priority for me.” In regards to Rauners plan, Anderson says, “I think the governor’s got a bold plan and we’re in the infancy stages of finding out where the money is and getting rid of the bureaucracies, but the biggest one we can get rid of right away are the unfunded mandates. The schools are plagued with unfunded mandates and we need to get rid of those so teachers, like I said, can teach.”Overall, the focus will be on the students that will lead our economy to a better future. Rauner says, “I’ll fix the budget crisis, but I’m going to put education first.”
