Does anyone know the area that was defined as "Mitchell and the vicinity of"...I do. Remember, Mitchell is not incorporated into a city, so they cannot have any legally defined boundaries.

    "The Vicinity of Mitchell"

From a series of articles in the Granite City Press Record in the 1960's...Mitchell (the Vicinity of) was bounded on the west by the Mississippi River, On the east by Highway 157...on the North by The Hartford Canal...and on the South by Morrison Road.

We had a dispute with the Carpenters International in the 1990's and I was on the committee to prove just what was the Vicinity of Mitchell. I found the proof in the Press Record archives in the Granite City Library. Tho I successfully proved what was, the Vicinity of unincorporated Mitchell...Granite City Carpenters Local (which as of July 1 2011 is no longer a chartered local) 633...lost all of that area.

Our carpenter area used to go to (and included the SIU Campus)Illinois 157 on the east...the Mississippi River on the west. The middle of Collinsville Road (the Madison County Line) on the south...and the Hartford Canal on the north.

We lost the area north of Interstate 270 to Alton Carpenters Local 1808...and east of Interstate 255 to Collinsville Carpenters Local 295. We kept the community of Mitchell...but lost what was known as "The Vicinity of Mitchell"...which was clearly defined as our area in our carpenters charter.
