Ameren did that with a gas meter at my last house, the meter apparently hadn't worked for over a year, they changed the meter out and wanted to play catch up. I told them, I don't know what the gas usage was, it's your job to track that, you have that equipment, not me. They averaged my gas bill from the same period last year and I think I ended up paying two or three months worth of that average price. They could only bill for a certain number of months though (3???). I came out ahead on that deal, but I know of one other who recieved a $300 "catch up" bill.
Based on this, I guess my questions are thes: Who does the miscalculation belong to? How did they arrive at a figure of $30,000? Will this payment plan involve interest? I wouldn't like that if the miscalculation were the fault of Ameren.
