Is Kulick high?....The worst part is north of Pontoon Road, hands down. He even mentions that the section north of Pontoon Road is ten years older than the south section!

Maryville Road fixes hinge on state cash
Some repairs to start this month

Granite City is waiting for more state money to resurface a bumpy section of Maryville Road north of Pontoon Road. The planned improvements are part of a multi-phase upgrade of the busy artery.

"It's millions of dollars. That's why we haven't been able to step up and do it all," said Mayor Ed Hagnauer.

Crews have already resurfaced Pontoon Road between Terminal and St. Clair avenues; a second phase scheduled to start this month will tackle the section between Terminal and Clark avenues.

When that's complete, the city will look at improvements north of Pontoon Road if money is available, said Brian Kulick, of city engineering firm Juneau and Associates Inc.

The repairs can't come soon enough for Marilyn Smith, 71, of the 4500 block of Maryville Road. Smith said she and her husband, Raymond Smith, take side streets to avoid Maryville Road as much as possible.

"It's terrible. It's certainly been getting worse in the past two years," she said.

Kulick said the street is simply wearing out. Maryville Road from Pontoon Road south dates to the 1970s, while the stretch north of Pontoon Road was built in the 1960s.

The city spent $400,000 to improve the road from Terminal Avenue to St. Clair Avenue last year.

Cathie A. Castillo, who lives in the 3200 block of Maryville Road said that portion is fine. However, "once you go past Pontoon Road, it's really bad."

The cost for the work from St. Clair to Clark is estimated at about $370,000 and will take about two months. Kulick said that section is in the worst shape. The city plans to fix the road in stages as state money is available. That may happen this summer, but there is no timeline, Hagnauer said.

Jason Brown, owner of the Weather Vane Drive-in at 3208 Maryville Road, said the fixes need to happen soon.

"So many potholes," he said. His customers "can't understand why all the other roads in town have been fixed but this particular one, which is highly traveled."
