I wish it would not be so cost prohibitive to do a full scale renovation of that building. Old buildings indeed are costly and it is too bad. But it's a school building, and even if a torrent of families with kids flooded the downtown core someday, that probably wouldn't be the school building to use. Schools just do not make good use for other purposes. Some will say, what about the conversion from Johnson School to the KC Hall.. and yes, that is quite a fine use of a school and some say it is one of the most KC groups around. But the more traditional school houses do not make good buildings unless they are gutted and non essential walls can be gutted and rooms reconfigured. Even then the ceilings are high and the ability to put in new heating and AC systems are cost prohibitive. Yes, it's an architectural gem...but there is little that can be done with it to run efficiently. Sadly, time to say goodbye to a building that goes back to almost the beginning of Granite city. But there is at least something going in there. The Mc Kinley/Hucks corner is not the brightest spot in town..and at least a new use of the property will keep that area from further blighting.
