Gary, I know the don't ask don't tell would not prevent you from having a gay roommate. What everyone needs to realize is the military is for fighting wars, period! There is no room for fairness when it comes to fighting battles. Yes, there have been very successful gay service members who went above and beyond, but you have to remember those service members are few and far between. The majority of gay service members would most definitely impact unit cohesion. Whether you agree with me or not, this is the truth. When you get hundreds of service men living together in such tight living conditions, there will be those who have problems with gay service members, and this would effect how they work with one another. When it comes to training for war or actually living it, this is not the time for equal opportunity, fairness, feelings, or equal rights, this is a time for surviving. The last thing I would be worried about is treating everyone with fairness. Perhaps there are many gay service members that would be beneficial to their country, but those numbers would be small. If you have never served in the military, I think this is something you will never understand. I'm not bashing anyone for not serving, this is one of our wonderful rights we have. When we deal with the military, we need to draw the line somewhere, otherwise we need to be prepared to lose our military power, and more importantly, lives!
