By early April many people had been laid off, and small businesses were shut down.
We formed a committee of small business people to collect one-page plans to re-open, when the time came.
The time didn't come.
Then the statistics began to come in. New unemployment claims: Jan 915, Feb 729 (so far that's normal), then March 6,856, then April 8,098.
On Saturday, May 2nd I sent a very polite letter/email to the Governor.
On May 5th, I called for two meetings of the Madison County Board of Health, one on May 7th to discuss, and one on May 8th, to take action.
The State's Attorney and county board wanted more time, and a bi-partisan committee (Ray Wesley (R), Erica Harris (R), Chrissy Dutton (R), David Michael (R), Chris Hankins (D), Matt King (D) and Gussie Glasper (D)) to work with the State's Attorney's office.
This committee put together a resolution and guidelines that passed this evening 26 to 2.
It passed because the committee did an excellent job.
It also passed because county board members received hundreds and hundreds of emails and phone calls - from YOU.
Thank you!!!
In the midst of this process was the National Day of Prayer, May 7.
Yes, people prayed. Perhaps you prayed.
What's next?
I believe our small businesses and churches can open up in a responsible manner.
If not, the Board of Health has powers to intervene in those situations.
Again, thank you for contacting your county board members.
What did Ben Franklin say? "We've given you a republic . . . if you can keep it."
