Do the girls deserve to be bullied? No they don’t. But it’s hard to get kids and teenagers to take responsibility for the part they hold in every situation when we have society making excuses for them. I have told my children, “For every action there’s a reaction.....every choice has a consequence.” They know what the code of conduct agreement says, they have to agree every year before they can even try out for the team. That code of conduct was breached, so why shouldn’t they be held accountable for that? Everyone keeps saying “they’re kids. Kids make mistakes.” At this point, they’re closer to being adults than they are kids. Who’s going to make the excuses for them when they’re grown and screw up thinking they can do what they want with no consequence? Employers are using social media to research their applicants now, and does anyone think they’re going to accept “they’re just kids. Kids make mistakes” as an excuse. Maybe at a fast food joint or gas station, but not anywhere that’s going to pay worth a damn.
I’m not saying that these girls should be the only ones disciplined for this, the coach is just as culpable. But just because the coach was there and didn’t say anything doesn’t mean these girls should not have any consequences for their choices either.
