It was assuredly a morale booster and maybe the crew rallied together to save their job and Matheny's - but more difficult match ups await them and some needed change will take place.
It would be hard to imagine a full-on rebuild.
However, the Cubs did it. Perhaps two years before the World Series, they were as far in the basement as could be. In 2014 and 2015, they loaded up on talent -- much of it home-grown, some stolen from the Cardinals... and by 2016 molded a champion.
Things aren't so grand in Wrigleyville either, but not as dire as it is in St. Louis.
It's too bad Matheny's best performance was a second place finish in 2013.
Sometimes I think coaching changes are over-rated - but it's all about results. Sometimes it's that shake-up and that feeling that not even the highest paid starter is safe in their job ... not even Yadier.
