My grandfather passed away suddenly & unexpectedly last week. He worked for Thomas J. Lipton (Unilever)& was a union member in Independence, MO for several years, retiring in 1992 at the age of 51 due to being disabled. My grandma, who has never worked, is only going to draw a small portion of his social security. She thought he had life insurance through Lipton because she read in a handbook, while he was still employed, that retiree's would have it. Now Lipton says that's not true. She has to wipe out all of her savings to pay for the funeral. She contacted a friend that worked with my grandpa & he is trying to get some info, because he believed the same, but told her because he was a member of the union she should also get $500 from the union. This is a very difficult & emotional time for all of us, especially my grandma, so I am trying to get as much info as possible. If anyone knows anything about Lipton's so called retiree life insurance, the $500 union death benefit, or if it's possible he should have received some kind of pension from the union, I would GREATLY appreciate it. The union was local 838.
