No, I believe he's being watched over by his guardian angel or a spirit guide and perhaps a few family members that have passed.
If the black figures worry him tell them in a firm voice to go to the light.
Also tell his eye doctor and family doctor about the dark figures he's seeing in his side vision.
It could be a side effect from medicine or a problem with his sight since it's only in his peripheral vision (side view).
