Hi Christie
While I can't help with why this can happen, I can asure you that it does happen. I experienced this on a semi-regular basis between the ages of 5 and 14. I knew that I was wide awake however I could not move anything more than my eyes and fingers. What was the scariest for me is that more often than not my face was either smoothered in a pillow or by a thin layer of sheet. No matter how hard I tried I could do nothing to remedy the position that I was in and each time I thought for sure I would die. The strange thing is once I could move again I would mereley pull my face from the pillow or quickly remove the sheet from my face, then resume sleeping (without moving any other body part). I've always thought it was unusual that after all that I never adjusted my sleep position or sat up or anything that would seem a logical thing to do. I also remember thinking that there was something in the room that was prohibiting me from moving as well as holding the sheet or pillow to my face.
