If I can route the fuel line over to the right side of the car and up inside the frame rail I may give that a try since it would keep all the trapped fuel below the float bowls and float valves.
I spent this afternoon tinkering with my spare set of carbs. I removed the float bowls and attached a 1/16" thick plate (with cutouts) in place of the bowl. I put that over a clear plastic bowl, hooked up an electric pump, and attached a reservoir of mineral spirits. I experimented with the float height and confirmed that the float valves really could shut the fuel delivery off. It was a good learning tool. It also confirmed that the factory recommended float height of 18mm (for the early 150CD) was right. 19mm may offer a little extra protection if it doesn't adversely affect running.
We were going to see Mike and Sandy at the Wilde Hare race at VIR last month. However, the day before the event the weather changed and there was cold rain that entire Saturday. We've spent enough cold wet race days at VIR so we decided to stay home. I hope both you and Mike have a good outing. Vintage tread and tire construction could make this an interesting weekend. Tell Mike to keep the shiny side up.

Either is more than a little burble after shutdown.
You may be on to something.
Possibly running the line behind the engine would be a little lower and be accessible.
