Would it work if I checked to see if the oil is pumping if I removed the oil bypass valve assembly from the side of the block, instead of the oil plug at rear of the head as you describe? That seems like an easier job.
Hopefully I didn't run the engine too long - - I started it twice but shut off as soon as I saw the idiot light come on. But I did turn it over a couple of times with coil disconnected, for maybe as much as 30 seconds using the starter motor alone.
