Looked at my tires. Code is 202.
Digging tells me pre-2000 (I knew that), so that puts them either at 1992 or 1982...Likely 92. I'm replacing them anyway, although they show no signs of aging so they work for now (aside from wear down to the wear-bars). Been garaged the entire time it's been off the road.
Thanks for the info Glen. I've always wondered.

: Thanks for the info, Glen. I will
: check the age of the tires. I think it
: is about 5 yrs old.

: The DOT code on the sidewall will tell
: when the tire was manufactured.
: There is a 4-digit number code in an
: elongated oval stamp, following the DOT
: stamp, usually following one or two
: other codes, the first 2 numbers are the
: week, the last 2 are the year.
: Example- DOT (XXXX) (1012)
: This tire would have been made in the
: 10th week of 2012.

: As Doug suggested, likely isn't in the
: diff.
: It could be that the tires are just
: hard from age.
: Too much tire pressure will cause it as
: well.

: Question: I have noticed that one of my
: rear wheel spins easily on wet
: pavement. What could cause that when
: our cars are not that powerful? My
: tires have a lot of tread left. Is my
: differential broken? I have a 3:23 rear
