Try Dougs method, or use a stethoscope, and check around the timing cover.
A metallic screeching noise from that area will be obvious, and most likely caused by a broken chain tensioner.
If all OK there, the next step would be pull the oil filter, dissect and inspect for metal. Make sure there isn't anything seriously bad going on inside and if it is an internal mechanical noise it will most likely be making metal.
It's hard to quantify the degree of noise through a computer, if it's just an annoying little noise, shoot a couple squirts of WD40 or the like around the timing cover seal.
OTOH it could be the pistons attempting to fuse themselves to the cylinder walls...!
