The trick is to provide as much saturation time as possible, without upsetting the action of the points opening and closing; there are "assymmetric" cam designs that do this more effectively than old style symmetric lobes. For example the later Lucas has a shorter more aggressive opening ramp, which increases the amount of dwell period.
As the number of cylinders increases, 4-6-8, this becomes more critical because there are more pulses required per distributor revolution.

: That's a damn interesting question Doug.
:
: Let's see..... The purpose of the
: dwell/gap is to adjust how long the
: points are closed, making sure they're
: closed long enough to charge the coil.
: So, being as both engines used the same
: coil, setting the same Dwell angle
: should suffice.
:
: However, it's possible that the two
: distributors might have different
: profiles on the cam that opens the
: points (but I think this would be
: unlikely). If I didn't (or couldn't)
: set the dwell angle, then I'd use the
: point gap measurement for the specific
: distributor (again, because we're
: firing the same coil). But of course,
: a match book cover ALWAYS works -
: doesn't it? - lol

: Recently I was thinking about something
: related to this thread.
:
: If you change from a Delco to Lucas
: distributor, what do you set the points
: gap or dwell to? Do you use the
: gap/dwell published in the manuals for
: the Delco distributor or do you use the
: gap/dwell for other cars using the
: Lucas distributor?

: Hi Oscar. I forgot to add that before
: I
: can do the distributor, I need to shake
: loose a few hundred dollars for the
: Speedhut GPS Speedo and Electronic
: Tach. So, although the upgrade is
: definitely going to happen, it isn't
: going to happen right away. Sorry
: about that.

: Thanks Jim,

: Hi Oscar. I have a TR6 Pertronix
: distributor that I plan to install in
: the MK2 engine in place of the Delco.
: I was sent some TR6 clamp that's
: supposed to make the dizzy install on
: the GT6. We'll see. When I get around
: to it, I'll be sure to update you here.
