As I mentioned, all these brake/clutch parts were new 20+ years ago and I have never exposed the rubber bits to DOT-3 or DOT-4. I just bought a new clutch master and rear wheel cylinders. I noticed while working with the wheel cylinders that they were lubed with something other than "the red grease". I THINK they were assembled using brake fluid as the lube. If it IS brake fluid, then the seals have already been exposed to DOT-3 or -4 for however long they have been on the shelf. That may be long enough for the seals to shorten their life when installed in a DOT-5 system.
When I start replacing the other parts in the system the tell-tale bits will be the front caliper seals and the flex hoses which I KNOW have never seen DOT-3/-4. If those seals are gooey, something else has been going on. If they are not gooey and the 20+ year old wheel cylinder seals are... that suggests the problem is from the assembly lube used by the manufacturer.
