How about just deepening the hole for the lower case bolt, doing a 90 degree drill to that from inside the diff, and then just putting an O-Ring and washer on the bolt? I'd feel a lot better with that arrangement.

: I drill & tap for drain plugs in
: every one I build, SOP.
: Smart call on not using the pitted
: gears.
: Don't be intimidated by it. It's
: largely a matter of tolerances, proper
: interpretation & setting of the R&P
: gears, and setting preload. Some of
: them take a lot of time to get just
: right but after you understand what is
: going on it makes sense.
: The spreader as Scott posted will make
: the job a little easier.
: If you want to "practice" on
: it, hone the ID of the old carrier
: bearings & pinion head bearing so
: they are a slip fit, and try setting it
: at different pinion depths, and shim
: the carrier to suit, and you will see
: the mesh pattern change.

: I cleaned the differential teeth on the
: spare I had from the parts car. The
: gear teeth have too much corrosion
: damage to consider using. However, I
: will use it as a learning tool to

: Before I start the tinkering I have a
: question about oil filling and
: draining. I have seen on other TR
: diffs where people have tapped the
: bottom of the diff cover to add an NPT
: pipe plug as a drain. Is it reasonable
: to do this with a Spitfire diff?
: Assuming the covers are
: interchangeable, I would modify this
: cover and use it on any future diff I
: rebuild.
