At this point I have set the valves and given it an ignition tune-up with new points and condenser. I checked the remaining ignition parts and found no problems. I have also replaced the fuel filters and made sure all the connections to the electric pump are secure and clean. I have checked the pump operation and checked the operation and level of the float valve. The carb oil is also topped up. Perhaps one of the things I hit with my shotgun approach addressed the problem... maybe not. The muffler bearings are next on my list.
My son may have reached a turning point. While he loves this car, he has been using my old Civic for a while now. He has discovered that he does need more carrying capacity and may be about ready to let the Spitfire go.
