I made my first fitment of the crank tonight. Plastigauge says the main journals have almost exactly .002" clearance to the shells. Higher than I wanted and I guess OK by what is published in Bentley. Mixing thrust washers I found a combination that put me right at .006" of endfloat, dead center in the spec.
I'd like to say I'll get more done tomorrow... but life tends to get in the way.

: You were correct, the short plug goes in
: the front and the plate has a clearance
: hole in case the installed plug is
: proud of the front of the surface as it
: is on my block.
:
: This is sort of a rhetorical
: question/comment. Online and in my
: Bentley manual I find references for
: the pressure plate to flywheel bolts
: being 5/16 UNF with a reasonable torque
: for that size. Unfortunately, the
: bolts are really 1/4 UNF socket heads.
: If you apply the specified (5/16")
: torque they are going to shear.
: Spitbits, Rimmer, and Canley all list
: part 146176 as the clutch cover screw
: but fail to mention its real size. I
: am just surprised no one else has run
: into this and mentioned it online.
: (Naahhh, I didn't break any and don't
: need any of the screws. I was just
: surprised to see the mistake both in
: the manual and online).

: I'm thinking that the short plug goes
: in
: front, check fit it and make sure it
: goes deep enough that it doesn't stand
: proud of the block face.
