Considering that it had a previous blow-up, it's entirely possible that the carrier was damaged, possibly cracked, already.
Was this a freshly "rebuilt" unit, used? Approx how much time on it since rework?

: I considered it but can't convince
: myself
: that it could somehow cause the loads
: that would be necessary to cause that
: damage.
: With an open diff, I would be inclined
: to think that it would be less likely.
: The apparent absence of major damage to
: any of the cogs, and the amount of
: shrapnel, makes me thing that this was
: immediate.
: If it was something that was
: developing, in addition to gear whine
: and vibration, I would expect to see
: FODded gear faces etc ie wear.
: Is there any witness mark where the
: spyder shaft whacked the case? If there
: is, it could suggest that the carrier
: split immediately prior, because the
: roll pin is still attached. Once that
: shaft comes out, it's all over in a
: hurry.

: I've held off speculating on the cause
: of
: failure... because I really can't come
: up with anything, based on what I see
: in the (good) pictures. Obviously the
: carrier pretty much disintegrated. The
: spyder gear shaft looks like it was in
: place, and there doesn't appear to be
: major gear damage, suggesting that this
: was immediate catastrophic failure.
: What is also unusual is a failure like
: this, with an open differential. Over
: the years I have seen a few failures
: similar, on race cars with sticky tires
: and locked rears, where there isn't
: enough left to make a determination of
: what the cause was...

: Hi.
: It's somewhat modified but I barely
: popped the clutch when it blew. Maybe
: only 4000 RPMs

: Hi. Have you considered the tire

: Hi.
: I've looked over the damage and there
: are some marks on the case. It's hard
: to say if they are fresh or from the
: last time it blew up. Obviously this
: case had a hole in it from sometime
: before me and it was brazed up nicely
: and painted over on the outside. What
: is apparent to me though is that the
: dowel pin that holds the spider gear
: shaft in place was bent at about a
: forty five degree angle. Also I'm not
: sure how long that pin should be but
: after exploding it's about one inch
: long(seams short) so maybe it came out
: and the shaft came out too causing
: BANG. Does that sound likely?
