I normally use oil on the threads, I don't loosen before I retorque, I use a slight initial overtorque to break the fastener free and click it to final value.
Uprated studs & moly bolt lube require different torque specs.
Re cam timing, the equal clearance check on the rear cylinder is a quick and easy way to check when the engine is all together. On a build, I normally set the initial location split on rear cylinder, and then fine-tune going by LCA & opening/closing points on #1.

: Regarding re-troquing the head, with TR
: engines is that done hot or cold and at
: what point after break-in?
:
: I am putting the cart way before the
: horse with the following
: question/comment. You may remember
: that I rebuilt the GT6 engine about 2
: years ago and asked a similar question
: then. Why oh why did Standard Triumph
: decide to set cam timing based on equal
: lift on valves 7 & 8? It would be
: so much easier with a symmetrical
: pattern to base the valve timing on the
: max lift (LCA) for intake #1. That can
: be done with degree wheels and dial
: indicators without the head being on.
: No matter... as I said, I'm getting way
: ahead of myself since the machinist
: hasn't even measured the parts for me
: yet.

: If you're at .030, and you have a heavy
: ridge, you'll probably have to go .060.
: I'm not crazy about taking a street
: engine out to the max, in fact I can't
: say that I recall having done a 1500 to
: .060. I wouldn't say that it's not
: doable, but could certainly lead to
: problems, if something wasn't quite
: right.
: The recessed-ring gasket works well...
: IF...
: -a quality gasket is used
: -head studs/nuts in good shape or
: upgraded
: -all surfaces are true & correct
: spec & finish
: -the head is properly torqued &
: RETORQUED.
:
: Most gasket failures that I see are a
: result of failure to RETORQUE!
:
: There's no problem decking the block
: flat and using the early gasket if
: necessary.
: A set of good head studs and good
: engine cooling will help keep it
: clamped down.
:
: Your other options are the questionable
: core engine that you might find, and
: sleeving your present block back to
: standard, $$$ and not without some
: degree of risk... ie operator-sensitive
: work
