My oil leak tests were carried out first by removing the dizzy and operating the oil pump with a drill and mandrel. I static timed the engine when I put the dizzy back in and I thought all was well but the engine is not really happy at the moment (grey sooty exhaust smoke and stumbling when reving the engine with the car parked [and there is oil in the dashpots]). My next effort will have to be a complete tune up. I am also unhappy that the brand new water pump installed during the engine rebuild last year has a shaft leak. Yet more parts to order.
This engine has the S2 cam and stock (whatever number they are) Stromberg needles. I will static time the engine to 8 BTDC and set the jets 2 turns down from flush for starting.
Finally my questions....
Do any of you have suggestions on the dynamic timing for the S2 cam? I suppose I could bring the revs to 4k RPM and set the max advance to 32 BTDC but I am hoping someone here has other suggestions first.
If you have tried the S2 cam (or its closest Good Parts equivalent cam), did you continue to use stock needles or did you change to something else?
I'm sure I'll get this sorted out. However, I welcome your advice and comments on how to make the end result of this "better".
Thanks,
Doug L.
