If you pull one of the fuel vent hoses off one of the carbs you should be able to blow through it into the can. That's the 1/4 inch brass tube opposite the fuel inlet.
Getting back to basics, how does the engine run overall and how does it respond to the "piston lift" mixture check?
FWIW I routinely chuck the charcoal can mess, vent the fuel tank, and vent the carb and crankcase directly ie pre 1967.
I also often wind up with a bunch of left-over parts ie bimetallic valve assy and decell valves... JB weld is your friend...

: Thanks for your comments and have checked
: the mentioned points. It looks like to
: me that the crankcase
: ventilation/carbon canister system has
: too much restriction. When I disconnect
: the hose, rpms jump up. I read in an
: article from John Twist that the rpms
: should not increase.
:
: Could someone please help me with an
: experiment? Could you take off the hose
: connecting the carbon canister to
: manifold on your engine while running
: and see what happens to the rpm?
: Thanks!

: They are the emission controlled carbs,
: they work fine except that they have
: the add-ons ie idle trim, bimetallic
: temp compensator and decell valve assy,
: all of which can cause mixture problems
: (internal air bleeds).
: The diaphragms are a common problem, as
: has been mentioned, and make sure that
: the bowl vents are clear, if the
: incorrect air filter gasket is fitted
: it will block one off, as will a
: plugged charcoal can.
: If the carbs have been sitting for a
: long time, especially if there is
: unknown history, it would probably be
: best to consider going through them now
: because they can cause a lot of
: problems if they aren't set up
: properly.

: They are Stromberg 150 CDSE carbs. I
: already made sure the chokes are not
: engaged.

: The first thing I would do is make sure
: that the chokes aren't stuck partly on.
: What model carbs?

: After 10 years of body/interior work on
: a
: 72 GT6 that I bought on ebay, I got the
: engine running. Good compression but
: puffs of black smoke on acceleration. I
: suspect the problem is related to the
: carbon canister/crankcase ventilation
: system being too restrictive creating
: too much vacuum at the carbs. When I
: remove the oil filler cap, engine rpms
: jump up. Is this normal? What else can
: I try?
