I made the "tool" up out of misc scrap in a weekend a lot of years ago. It's spring loaded "closed" and the mic picks up the under-the-shoulder measurement at that station (thickest). There are 1/8 graduations marked and the "bullseye" red sight hole to confirm it is exactly on station when measured.
The procedure is simple, lock down (handle at top), insert needle, measure, unlock and move 1 graduation and confirm sight gauge all red, lock and repeat as necessary. I plot the specs out on graph paper, and it's repeatable to within 1/2 thou.
It's made out of everything from an MG column switch handle, an SU piston guide rod and pot center section, PVC pipe, etc etc.
The problem is that it only does the SU needles with the 1/8 shank. The biased HIF and Strombergs won't fit.
Lots of strange things can be done with these carbs, the jet centralization and correct needle specs are the key...

: OK... I have a couple of questions.
:
: First, Glen, what is (or was) that
: device before it became your needle
: tool? Then... how do you use that
: tool (not the micrometer... the whole
: thing)?
:
: I don't have Stromberg parts around
: here to measure so again, I fall back
: to SUs. These are more naive questions
: and suggestions. I KNOW this has been
: asked before by others so please feel
: free to correct me and put me straight.
:
: With SUs needles the taper diameter is
: measured in thousandths of an inch
: every 1/8" along the length of the
: needle and I am assuming that is the
: way Stromberg needles are also
: characterized. If the inside diameter
: of Stromberg and SU jets are the same,
: could you not use SU needles in
: Stromberg carbs? Sure you would
: probably have to bush or turn down the
: mounting stem diameter but if the jets
: are the same size it could open up a
: whole world of possible needles.
:
: Since the link to Paul T's needle page
: was posted earlier, there is another
: one that you might find helpful. Once
: again, this is for SUs but it may prove
: useful (if not now... in the future).
: The Mintylamb utilities will let you
: graphically compare different SU
: needles. This gives you an idea how
: lean or rich one will be compared to
: another at various amounts of carb
: piston lift.
