(can't believe I had a photo taken with a Sony MAVICA - so I didn't have to lift the car today)
When I said "kind of" - in my case I USED a NOS British Layland OD kit for a 1980 Spitfire and converted the GT6 box.
You won't have to deal with that IF you are going to swap complete boxes - but you will be dealing with swaps bellhousing, driveshaft, trans crossmember support, mount and ALL of the components that support the OD box. (Wire harness, relay, speedo cable and rightangle adapter and the "hollow shift handle with switch knob"
Having said that IF you don't have harnesses I did find an owner (in MI I think) that had don't OD conversions and "wired" differently (and better) than the way the cars were done IMO Originally they acted only on 3rd and 4th and may have used 2 relays. His way uses one and wires so you have OD on all 4 gears.
If you look at my photo above and compare to these http://bit.ly/11S3Iwx you will see how the "adapter" is different for the early and late box. (In my case I had to PLUG the shifter rail hole in the adapter / other than using the mainshaft from the OD trans)
Mark
P.S. I'm thinking that is because they were using the box in the TR7 (with the rail shifter)

: I have a GT6+ engine and non-OD GT6
: tranny that I plan on putting in my

: a complete Tranny with J-Type OD from a
: Spitfire. I would like to add the
: J-type OD to the GT6 tranny. Anyone do
: this before? What is involved? What
: would be a good Diff ratio to work with
: this combo? I think I have a 3:89 in
: the Spitfire with OD. Thanks,
