Re the "right stuff", that sealer is GREAT! I have been using it since before it was even on the mainstream market... but.... BUT.... as you have discovered, it works a little too well!
Yes use it sparingly, and I usually apply it to one face, and before clamping things together, wipe a very light film of oil on the other face. It will still seal perfectly but will come apart a lot easier.

: Tight is bit of inaccurate word.
: Everything spins freely but with a bit
: of drag I think induced by assembly
: grease. I did not mention I did not
: find this canted over spring. I took my
: gearbox to a local retired guy who
: restores Triumphs. We spend about 3 1\2
: hours going over it looking for
: problems. In addition to finding the
: spring he advised not to use so much
: gasket sealer "The Right
: Stuff" he said a lot less would
: prevent leaks. We spent a big part of
: the time working on breaking the seal
: between bell housing tail shaft an body
: of the box

: Good that you have the release problem
: fixed but I would be somewhat concerned
: about it being "tight". There
: will be just a very slight bit of drag
: on the laygear from those springs, the
: first and third motion shafts should be
: free. It's hard to quantify over the
: internet, a light drag is OK, any more
: than that could indicate another
: problem.
: FWIW a common cause of the box being
: stiff is the omission of the washer in
: front of the tailshaft bearing during
: asembly.

: Well found out why my transmission
: locked
: up. When I assembled the gearbox and
: the bell housing I was careless about
: the three small springs which I think
: preload the lower gear set. One of them
: leaned over and was crushed between the
: bell housing and the box. This canted
: the bell housing to one side preventing
: the input shaft and rest of gears from
: moving. Once fixed box movement is
: tight but very smooth. I think I can
: rebuild GT6 gear boxes but not a
: barrel of fun.

: You should be able to see the problem
: with the cover off. The output should
: turn when it's in neutral, the 1st
: motion obviously with the clutch
: disengaged.
: If the first motion is locked up ie
: clutch won't disengage... it's likely
: that old "this side towards
: flywheel" thing...
: Keep us posted.

: Thanks for the ideas you are the second
: to suggest looking at reverse. Top is
: on but will come off when I have
: chance. Last nights mood was set car on
: fire I have calmed down.Clutch was
: replaced but the input shaft went in
: slick as a whistle so I don't think
: that is the problem

: Is the top cover off?
: If not, I would first remove it and see
: if the syncros are in the neutral
: position and make sure reverse is not
: engaged.

: Well got the transmission bolted to the
: engine and no neutral, seems locked
: tight. Before installing the input
: shaft turned smoothly but now it is
: locked by the engine and so is the
: output shaft in all gears and neutral.
: What stupid thing could I have done?
: Not got the shift forks in the right
: place?

: Glen you were right thanks a lot for
: the
: advice. The new hub was not very
: carefully machined. I filed for about
: an hour cleaning up cuts and burrs and
: it went on perfectly no slop just
: smooth axial movement.
:
: --Previous Message--
: OK the sync hub should float axially on
: the mainshaft.
: There might be some machining burrs on
: the splines that you could stone down
: or maybe try a bit of fine lapping
: compound. If you do lap it make sure
: it's perfectly clean before you
: assemble.

: 1/2 inner sync hub. Looks like could
: slide back and forth a bit when go from
: 1 to 2. Would take a small amount of
: slack on part of syncros , they would
: just float. Looks like the old was worn
: or intentionally made so it could slide
: back and forth a bit along with the
: syncro sleeve. New syncro hub is such a
: tight fit on the mainshaft it will stay
: where I put it. Centered between the
: split collars and the 2nd sipped gear?
:
: --Previous Message--
: Do you mean the 1/2 inner sync hub
: (splined) or the second gear bush?
: It doesn't really matter because they
: both need running clearance.

: Next transmission question. Is the fit
: between the 1st/2ndsyncro sleeve and
: the mainshaft supposed to be a loose
: sliding fit or tight with the sleeve
: centered between the split collars and
: the 2 nd speed gear. The old worn
: sleeve was very worn and loose, the new
: is a tight fit and will not slide when
: in place along the mainshaft towards
: the 1st gear or towards the 2nd gear.
