Differential Seals

I am getting ready to replace the seals on my differential. I really do not feel like taking the whole rear off the car. Has anyone ever tried replacing the seals without removing the differential off the car? I was thinking that maybe disconnecting the driveshaft and both axles might work. Last time I replaced that differential, I remember how much work was involved. Anyone?
