Vibration during acceleration

Anyone have any thoughts- I have started noticing a low frequency (pitch-not occurrence) vibration in my '68 GT6 mk1 when I accelerate in 3rd and 4th gear. The vibration goes away when I step off the gas. Worst is 4th gear at 3,000 rpms. The car has also started to vibrate at high speads (75-80? my speedometer jumps a bit). Seems like to the quietest speed groove is 65-70 mph. I am thinking of starting with a wheel re-balance but am worried it might be a symptom of developing gear box problems.
