A 'liquid level'. Get about 10-20 ft of clear tubing. Attach each end to the top of a yardtick held vertical by a weighted base. Fill with colored water until the level is about halfway up each yardstick. The levels of the water on each end will equalize, no mater where you move the ends. For a bigger project, use longer tubing.
But laser levels are so cheap nowdays, it might be easier to just go with one of those.
