Louis just a few things to check, besides the usual things which you would check on any car-
-crankshaft end-float
-pay close attention to the appearance of the hydraulic fluid in the master reservoirs, look for dark contaminated fluid, that is what is throughout the system
-check front lower trunnions for wear
-check for gearbox noise that goes away when clutch is depressed, indicates bearing wear
-check differential for excessive lash/lost-motion
-check rear outer hubs for play/wear (corrections usually require new axle shaft)
-look for excessive negative camber on rear, can indicate bushing wear or weak rear spring
A few other things you might consider-
-Cut open the oil filter can, remove element, remove top & bottom pieces, and stretch out element on clean paper towels. After a few hours you will be able to see any trash that's getting pumped through the oil system.
-also...FOR TESTING PURPOSES ONLY... advance the timing at idle to the point that it starts to run rough, and then crank in a tad more (you will probably be around 15+ degrees over book spec), quickly crack the throttle a few times & listen for any heavy hammering. What this does is to overload the pistons/rods/crank, and any heavy wear will be apparent.
-Oil samples from the box & diff are a good idea but the diff has no low point drain so its sample may not be valid.

: I agree that these cars are NO
: investments !
:
: Besides the floor pans, what should I
: look for underneath the cars ? Anything
: particular to the Spits ?
:
: Thanks for your input !

: I like round tails better, so the 69
: would have the upper hand. Better yet
: if it has the small crank 1296. Probaly
: be the deal closer. BUT, the 71 has
: the cleanest lines of the square tails.
: And the 79 is the most
: "luxurious" of those you
: listed (and heaviest with those
: bumpers).
:
: I would probably go the the one in best
: condition. HINT...you under the car.
:
: Don't look at these cars as an
: investment, unless you want results
: like my 401k of late.

: Assuming you had the opportunity to buy
: 4 different Spitfires for a frame-off
: restoration project. All are in very
: comparable shape (body, engine,
: interior, etc.) and the asking price is
: about the same for each:
:
: One is a '69, the other a MKIV from
: '71, the 3rd one is either '73 or a '74
: (not sure) and the last one is a '79
: 1500.
:
: None have a hard-top available and none
: have overdrive.
:
: Considering the availability for parts,
: value of a restored car, pleasure to
: drive, etc, and again, assuming the
: amount of work and money to spend is
: very similar for all cars: wich one
: would you choose ?
:
: Thanks for sharing your wisdom !
