By "plate" you mean "Commission Plate" not "chassis" just inside the "bonnet"? Realize, somebody set [each of] these numbers and letters by hand unlike today. Alignment and spacing was what ever the bloke did just then. Your best bet is to contact British Heritage for the complete listing of your model. But you're right to assume the "LO" to some degree, the MkII started at KC50,000 in July 1968 and ran through Dec 1970 ending with KC 83,397. So for now, we read this as a MKII. Good. Here's one that set me aback on this site; check on your chassis for a serial # plate/tag, just forward of the body on the leftside top, tac-welded on the chassis, near the oil filter area. Does it match the Chassis number on the plate below the Comm. plate?
You may want to check out Paul Teglers' Mega Spitfire site for the International GT6 Registry Database. You may learn something there too. 'Seems we all have identity issues to deal with, ie. where we fit in in all this.

: I have a 1970 GT6 and have a question
: about the Commission number. The number
: on the plate is “KC81284”, and then way
: off to the right of the number, on the
: same line is, "LO". I know
: the L designates left hand drive and
: the O means it is equipped with an over
: drive transmission, but is it supposed
: to be on the title as part of the
: commission number. Thanks
