If you are looking at a non-Triumph replacement, this is a much discussed subject. The object is usually a fifth gear or a more robust gearbox, and several have been proposed and used. But not by me.

May I suggest you go to the Club Triumph site and search around there? Nick Jones is a friend who has fitted a Ford 'box to his Vitesse with success - he's a 'proper engineer'! - so look for his posts.
