John have you tried the hose clamp trick as I responded to Oscars post a few threads below this?

Also to properly check a u-joint, the shaft has to be removed so you are able to feel the action of the joint. They can bind up & it won't always be apparent with the shaft still fitted.
This can be the source of vibrations.
