Josh that will sure cause a leak. If the spacer washer is fitted on the mainshaft (in front of the rear bearing). the nut should torque down tight. If the shaft tightens up when the nut is torqued, the washer is missing. I put a little bead around the shaft in front of the rear flange washer & a dab on the front of the nut, and torque it down. Some that I've torn down have a lock washer, I omit that & use a machined flat washer, for sealing. A bit of Loctite on the nut will lock it in place.
It also doesn't take much for the little make believe vent hole to get plugged up (top right of top cover in front of the reverse rail).
From the sound of it, you should be OK now.
