Good deal! Don't feel bad about the washer thingy, it has been done before, with the same results

: Thanks for the ideas- dissassembled the
: shifter this weekend and discovered
: that the bushing and fiber washers had
: disintegrated at the joint forward of
: the shift lever, creating lots of play,
: also, had interference with a washer I
: had installed below the nylon ball that
: sits in the cup at the base of the
: shift stalk!--was hitting the reverse
: lock-out plate--my bad! --had done this
: due to the ball repeatedly falling
: apart (and out). Installed a small
: retaining ring below the ball and that
: did the trick!. Thanks.

: You may have the same problem someone
: from this site had not too long ago. It
: may also be the plastic bushing located
: at the end of your shifter. I would
: check that first to make sure they are
: not dried up and cracked and missing
: some parts.

: My '69 GT6 will no longer select
: reverse.
: All other gears work fine, and the ball
: joint assembly directly below the shift
: lever is intact- I have not done
: further disassembly yet. When I push
: the shifter down and to the left and
: up, the shifter selects first gear- any
: ideas?? Is this outside or inside the
: 'box?--thanks!
